VAGABOND MANUSCRIPT CONSULTANTS

What is an Editor?

An editor makes your writing better with direct and specific feedback on all the parts of your manuscript crucial to creating a publishable whole.

First-time authors—and some already-published ones as well—are being told that their manuscripts need more work than in-house editors can give. Agents and editors are sending writers to manuscript consultants to shape up the book and get it into publishable condition.

My professional services are tailored to meet your particular needs. I will identify what needs to be done to polish and prepare it to submit to publishing houses. My goal is to facilitate the writing process and aid in the production of a well-written, reader-friendly text that reflects and maintains the writer's style. When necessary, I work closely with the writer, maintaining contact via telephone or email.

Vagabond Manuscript Consultants offers six basic editorial services:

» Traditional proofreading: mark deviations of your copy from its source manuscript, query editorial errors, and help ensure attractive typography (e.g., by checking margins and word spacing).
» Editorial proofreading: combines proofreading with some copyediting tasks, if they are needed late in the production process; correcting your text for spelling, punctuation, and simple errors in grammar and word usage, and we mark any obscure passages for your attention.
» Copyediting: in addition to proofreading your text, I correct all grammar and, where necessary, rework your sentences for clarity and consistent style.
» Substantive editing: clarifying and reorganizing the content and structure of your manuscript
» Stylistic editing: clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon and cliches, and smoothing language in your manuscript
» Research and fact checking

» Manuscript diagnostics: I accept for evaluation entire manuscript drafts of any length or genre and will also read chapters of work in progress. I give detailed, clear, line-by-line editorial feedback Too, each manuscript will receive a detailed written critique that discusses the work's strengths and weaknesses in the areas of plot, character development, dialogue, description, theme, and writing style. Specific suggestions for revisions and writing improvements will also be included.

Turn-Around Times
Upon my receipt of your manuscript, I will immediately acknowledge receipt. The time it takes to edit and return your manuscript varies due to the length of each segment you send, the number of changes/suggestions, the kind and complexity of changes, or issues you ask me to address. Generally, I can diagnose/edit 30 pages within a week of receipt. Mailing time is, of course, additional.

Confidentiality Assurance
All correspondence and materials germane to the author's interests, copyrights, and property shall remain confidential. Upon my receipt of your manuscript, you will be provided with a confidentiality assurance notice for that manuscript.
